Environmental Sustainability

Leading the Way Toward a Greener Future

At CIRANDA, we are deeply committed to environmental sustainability, shaping our global operations to prioritize the protection of natural resources and the reduction of our environmental footprint. Our work spans cutting-edge sustainability initiatives, meaningful partnerships, and hands-on involvement. As climate change continues to challenge ecosystems, we believe it’s our responsibility to lead with solutions that are both impactful and measurable.

Our Approach to Environmental Sustainability

Our strategy includes not only adopting organic and regenerative farming practices but also supporting global initiatives for carbon reduction, biodiversity protection, and renewable energy. We monitor our progress with comprehensive life cycle analyses and greenhouse gas assessments, ensuring that our supply chain contributes to the long-term health of the planet.

2023 Impact Report

As sustainability becomes increasingly important to consumers, brands are expected to lead the way in responsible practices. At CIRANDA, we’ve been committed to these values since our founding in 1994, and this year we are proud to release our first Sustainability Impact Report. This report highlights our dedication to transparency and outlines our efforts across three key pillars: Supply Chain Transparency, Environmental Sustainability, and Community Enrichment. Our report marks a significant step forward in our mission to create connections that nourish life and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Environmental Partnerships

  • Measuring Success Through Collaboration

While many companies make pledges, we take direct action to meet our sustainability goals. At CIRANDA, our boots-on-the-ground approach means actively engaging with farming communities, participating in industry advocacy, and aligning our practices with the regenerative agriculture movement. Our partnerships with both local and global organizations enable us to set benchmarks for environmental impact. By tracking our efforts, we can continually refine our strategies and stay at the forefront of the sustainability movement. We conduct an annual sustainability survey with our supplier partners, demonstrating our commitment to collaboration in sustainability.

  • Industry Advocacy & Policy Engagement

CIRANDA takes part in policy discussions through our involvement with the Organic Trade Association (OTA). By attending events like OTA’s Organic Week, we advocate for stronger environmental protections and expanding support for organic agriculture at the national level. Through these efforts, we ensure the voices of organic stakeholders are heard, influencing policies that promote sustainable farming practices. Our commitment helps shape a healthier, more resilient food system for future generations.

  • Hands-On Approach

Our hands-on involvement extends to our global ingredient partners. In 2023, we introduced our first Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC) ingredient, demonstrating our commitment to farming techniques that build soil health, increase biodiversity, and combat climate change.

  • Our Partners

We’ve built dozens of partnerships with environmental and agricultural organizations that share our sustainability values and are driving lasting, positive change in communities. Our partners' expertise, from climate change mitigation to soil health regeneration, inspires us and helps us reduce our carbon footprint while promoting the benefits of organic and non-GMO ingredients for both people and the planet.

From Seed To Shelf

The Life Cycle of Sustainable Practices

At CIRANDA, environmental sustainability means supporting the life cycle of our ingredients from the moment seeds are planted to the time products reach our customers. We promote energy-efficient and regenerative practices across our supply chain, ensuring that each step contributes to the health of the environment.

Regenerative Farming Innovations

To optimize water usage in rice production, we support laser land leveling and water monitoring, which maximizes productivity while conserving water. In tapioca production, our partners use biogas derived from wastewater treatment to power plants, drastically reducing emissions.

Renewable Energy Integration

Our agave syrup production facilities have adopted solar and biomass energy, minimizing their dependence on fossil fuels. Coconut farming operations follow sustainable practices, including intercropping and using natural fertilizers made from coconut waste. Coconut shells are also used as a fuel source for factory heating and steam needs. Each innovation contributes to a sustainable cycle of life for our ingredients and their ecosystems.

Our Carbon Footprint

Offsetting Emissions, Reducing Impact

At CIRANDA, reducing and offsetting our carbon emissions is a key pillar of our sustainability strategy. We partner with organizations globally and locally to offset over 833 tonnes of greenhouse gases.

Global Emission-Reduction Projects

We work with South Pole, investing in climate protection projects like the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Indonesia and the CYY Biopower Wastewater Treatment Plant in Thailand. These efforts have already offset over 710 tonnes of greenhouse gases.

Local Carbon Initiatives

Our partnerships with the National Indian Carbon Coalition in Wisconsin and the Indian Land Tenure Foundation in Minnesota further reduce emissions while supporting indigenous-led conservation efforts. Our local actions ensure that our carbon reduction efforts are both impactful and meaningful, offsetting more emissions than we generate annually.

Waste Reduction

Rethinking Resources to Limit Waste

Reducing waste is essential to our sustainability strategy. We focus on diverting distressed and damaged products away from landfills and finding new ways to repurpose them.

Waste Diversion Programs

Our waste diversion process identifies whether damaged products are fit for human consumption, suitable for feed, or appropriate for composting. Whenever possible, we partner with brokers and local networks to ensure these products find new homes rather than being discarded.

Inventory & Process Optimization

To further reduce waste, we have optimized inventory management processes and improved customer forecasting. These efforts ensure products are used before expiration, and when necessary, we offer customer discounts on products with reduced shelf life to prevent waste. In 2023 alone, CIRANDA diverted over 1 million pounds of distressed products from landfills, proving that even small changes can make a big impact.

Sustainable Campus Initiatives

Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

Sustainability is woven into the fabric of our operations. We have earned recognition as an Energy Star ® campus for our water and electrical conservation efforts. Our facilities are equipped with electric vehicle charging stations, photovoltaic solar panels, and energy-efficient lighting. Additionally, CIRANDA prioritizes environmentally friendly practices by using recycled or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) paper for business materials and avoiding single-use plastics wherever possible. Our employee-led Sustainability Committee spearheads many different sustainability events and education opportunities, including clothing swaps, community cleanups, informational sessions, and much more.

In February 2024, CIRANDA was highlighted as the “Featured Business of the Month” by the St. Croix County Recycling Program for our dedication to recycling, composting, and sustainability training.
